The concept of owning some portion of history is a question that the history professional should never have to address. That type of parameter is a political construct, and we all know how wonderfully real history and political agendas get along. When history becomes just history with all the actors represented then we will have done a service to society. Unfortunately too many groups wont be satisfied with that (tea party, NAACP, etc come to mind as do groups such as the DAR). It is ...The John Brown story makes your point well. It is our history and there should not simply be black history or white history. The trick is making the public and students realize this.
