He was wounded at Antietam and sent to the hospital... and then deserted. So, he only deserted once. Men like Watts play into my fascination ...Hi John,<br /><br />Men like Watts play into my fascination with those who may have come into the "Confederate circle" somewhat reserved (for whatever reason). Based on some of what I've seen from the Stonewall Brigade, from those who "came back" from desertion in the latter part of the winter of 1862/63, Watts may not have come back of his own free will. Conscript patrols were busy that winter, back on the home front, gathering deserters. I've seen several examples, exactly like what we see in Watts' service record... while the service record does not specify how he came back (voluntarily or not), different private accounts (diaries and letters) reveal that many came back involuntarily. I've seen this in the diary of my third great granduncle, who was a company commander in the 33rd Virginia Infantry. Also, this wasn't the first time Watts had deserted. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
